Winter skincare: protecting skin from cold, dry air
An Estonian winter tests skin twice over. Outside it is cold and windy; inside, the heating dries the air. The good news is that a few small changes to your routine go a long way.
Why skin dries out in winter
Cold air holds little moisture, and heating dries indoor air even further. Skin loses more water and can feel tight or rough.
Cleanse gently
Choose a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, not hot. Cleansing too hard also strips the skin’s own protective oils. An evening cleanse is usually enough; in the morning you can simply rinse with water.
Hydrate in layers
Apply a hydrating serum to slightly damp skin and a richer cream on top. For very dry skin, add a few drops of face oil over the cream at night to help hold the moisture in.
Don’t forget the sun
Winter sun is low, but snow reflects light. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in snowy landscapes, use sun protection in winter too.
Small habits
A humidifier in the bedroom, drinking enough water and a scarf against cold wind are simple ways to help skin through winter.
