Seaweed in skincare: what it actually does

Seaweed is a well-known skincare ingredient, but it comes with a lot of big promises. Here is a calm look at what seaweed extract does on the skin, and why we put it at the centre of our formulas.

What is seaweed extract?

Seaweed extract is made from seaweed that has been dried and processed so its water-soluble parts can go into a cream or serum. Red seaweeds are rich in polysaccharides, long sugar chains that give seaweed its ability to hold water and form a gel-like texture.

On a label you will find it in the INCI list under the seaweed’s Latin name, followed by the word “Extract”.

How it works on skin

Polysaccharides are humectants: they bind water and form a thin, flexible film on the skin’s surface. That film helps slow down moisture loss, so skin feels softer and smoother.

Seaweed also contains minerals it has collected from the sea. In skincare they play a supporting role, helping skin feel comfortable alongside other moisturising ingredients.

What to expect, and what not to

Seaweed extract is a good moisturiser and gives formulas a pleasant texture. It does not replace sunscreen and it does not treat skin conditions. If you have a persistent skin concern, ask a dermatologist.

Seaweed works best in a consistent routine: a gentle cleanse, a hydrating serum on slightly damp skin, and a cream on top to hold the moisture in.

Why the Kenyan coast

Our seaweed comes from the Kenyan coast, where the warm, sunlit Indian Ocean gives it good growing conditions. We work with local farmers so the raw material is traceable and benefits the community.
