Hyaluronic acid and seaweed: how they hydrate together
Hyaluronic acid and seaweed extract are both humectants, but they work a little differently. Together they hydrate skin on more than one level.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is also found naturally in skin. Cosmetics usually use its salt, listed in INCI as Sodium Hyaluronate. It binds water and helps skin stay hydrated.
Why two molecular weights?
Higher-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid stays on the surface and forms a hydrating film. The lower-molecular-weight form sinks into the upper layers of the skin. Using both hydrates the surface and a little deeper.
Where seaweed comes in
Seaweed polysaccharides also form a moisturising film and give the serum a silky feel. With hyaluronic acid, they help keep moisture on the skin for longer.
How to use it
Apply 2–3 drops of serum to clean, slightly damp skin. Humectants work best when there is water for them to hold. Then apply a cream on top to seal the moisture in. In dry winter air that last step matters most.
